How to choose

1. Use two cold sources

Food-safety guidance from the USDA is to pack perishable lunches in an insulated bag with at least two cold sources, like two ice packs or an ice pack plus a frozen drink.

2. Pick slim ice packs for small lunch boxes

Thin packs fit between containers and against the lid. Bulky blocks crowd out food in kid-size bags.

3. Match the box to your kid’s age

Younger kids need lids they can open alone. Older kids care more about capacity and a bag that doesn’t look “babyish.”

4. Add a food jar for hot lunches

Pre-heat the jar with boiling water for a few minutes, then add hot food. It’s the easiest way to send leftovers, soup or mac and cheese.

Frequently asked questions

How long do ice packs keep a lunch cold?

It depends on the pack, the bag and the classroom temperature. In an insulated bag, two frozen packs usually keep food cold until a typical school lunch period. Freeze packs overnight, not just for an hour.

Can I freeze a juice box or yogurt tube as an ice pack?

Yes. A frozen drink or yogurt tube works as a second cold source and is thawed enough to eat by lunch.

What’s the best lunch box for kindergarten?

Look for a small bento-style box with latches your child can open alone, plus a slim ice pack that fits inside the bag.

Are character ice packs as good as regular ones?

Shape matters less than thickness and freezing time. Character packs are mostly about making kids happy to bring their lunch back home.
